Welcome Week 2017 Schedule

Welcome Week is designated as the official period to welcome American University's new students to campus. This transition period provides a valuable opportunity for the building of the AU community by bringing together new students on campus. It is a time to encourage student involvement, boost school spirit, and create life-long memories. The week is packed with plenty of fun events from convocation, to Explore DC, to bingo, to free movies, to outdoor activities, and classroom tours. There's something for everyone during this incredible week! Below is a detailed schedule, including locations, offices, and event descriptions!
10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Coffee & Donuts at the Library

Move-in Day Snow Cone Giveaway

Move-in Day Parent Reception
While your student settles in, join your student's school for an early evening reception with leadership, faculty, and staff to welcome you and fellow parents to the Eagle family.

The International Student Orientation is meant to welcome all international undergraduate and graduate students to AU. It will provide important information such as sociocultural transition, legal, immigration and academic information for the students and their families. The orientation will also include the process of immigration registration which is essential to the incoming international students.

Join upperclassmen, staff, and folks from Men Can Stop Rape for a open, honest discussion around toxic masculinity, the negative impact on toxic masculinity - including rape culture, and opportunities for cultivating healthy masculinity. The Physics Department will be bringing eclipse glasses, our solar telescope, pinhole cameras, and our *popcorn machine* to the Main Quad for the celestial event. The peak of the eclipse (about 80% of the sun covered by the moon here in DC) will take place at 2:40PM.

This workshop will include conversations and interactive activities that address identifying and managing stress, learning how to effectively problem-solve in both class and life, and learning coping skills and techniques for a variety of different situations.

T-Shirt for Tie Dye

Panhellenic will provide t-shirts that first-year students can have fun tie-dying on the quad. Ideally, students would bring a t-shirt (or any clothing item) to be donated to a local shelter in exchange for a shirt. However, if students don't have anything it is no big deal- this event is for first years to have fun and be able to give back at the same time!

Join other students for a guided bike ride in the AU neighborhood to meet other cyclists and feel comfortable riding around campus. If you're a seasoned city rider, the Washington Area Bicyclist Association has new tips and tricks for you. If you're new to biking, we will help you master the fundamentals.
