Events Commemorating the Tenth Anniversary of 9/11

Thursday, September 1

Reflections On the Eve of 9/11: A Conversation with Professors Akbar Ahmed, Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American University, and Ed Kessler, Director of Cambridge University's Woolf Institute of Abrahamic Faiths

School of International Service Building, Abramson Family Founders Room

The conversation, moderated by School of International Service dean James Goldgeier, will cover some difficult questions, including "Where are we ten years after 9/11? What's changed? What hasn't?" The event will include a question-and-answer session with students and a small reception afterwards. Profs. Ahmed and Kessler co-teach the ground breaking fall e-course Bridging the Great Divide: The Muslim-Jewish Encounter. Sponsored by the School of International Service, Intercultural Management Institute, Center for Israel Studies, Jewish Studies Program, Kay Spiritual Life Center, Muslim Student Association, and Jewish Student Association.

Table Talk Lunch Series: "September 11: The Human Rights Impact 10 Years Later"

The Kay Spiritual Life Center strives to provide a forum for students to explore contemporary issues of ethical concern. The Table Talk will feature Elisa Massimino, president and chief executive officer of Human Rights First, and Juan Mendez, visiting professor of law at the Washington College of Law and the U.N. special rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment and Please r.s.v.p. to KSLC@american.edu. Lunch is free for students and there is a suggested donation of $5 for faculty, staff, and community members.

10 Years After 9/11: The Changing Terrorist Threat

Washington College of Law, Room 603

Ten years after the tragic events of September 11, the U.S. national security landscape continues to evolve. To counter the rapidly changing domestic, international, and non-state actor threats faced by the nation, the national security law community must be constantly looking forward to what the country might face next. This event will feature a keynote speech by Michael Leiter, director of the National Counterterrorism Center (2007-2011), and a panel discussion featuring officials from the current administration as well as academics who have helped shape the current policies and debates surrounding issues of vital importance to our national security. Co-sponsored by the Program on Law and Government at the Washington College of Law and the American University National Security Law Brief.

The 9/11 Unity Walk

Join the AU Interfaith Council and Kay Spiritual Life Center community for D.C.'s seventh annual 9/11 Unity Walk. Participants will meet in Kay at noon for a bagel brunch before heading down together to join the Gandhi-style walk along Embassy Row, stopping at various houses of worship celebrating interfaith understanding. Speakers, music, and prayers are offered along the way. Karen Armstrong, Arun Ghandi, and Mpho Tutu, as well as other international and local inter-religious leaders, are expected to participate.  All are welcome! After sundown, join the Student Government on the quad for a candlelight vigil.  Participants will be there to support each other, 9/11 victims, their families, first responders, and all others who were affected by the tragedy.
