The One-Day Service Events program (ODSE) was designed to provide members of the AU community with a myriad of opportunities to connect with the diverse communities of the District. Although this program is primarily focused on the facilitation of short-term community service projects there have been several enhancements that allow participants to experience deeper levels of community engagement. The Center for Community Engagement & Service (CCES) sponsors seven One Day Service Events each year.
National Day of Service: To remember the heroes and victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks the AU Community comes together to participate in a myriad of on-campus service projects. The event is facilitated by the AU Community Service Coalition. The CCES provides advisement and logistical support to the student club. The event is held on September 11th. This event is open to all members of the AU Community (Alumni, Faculty, Staff and Students).
Latino Heritage Month: Every September the CCES and AU's Latin American Student Organization (LASO) collaborate to co-sponsors a service event that provides support to a community partner who serves primarily DC’s Latino community. This event is open to all members of the AU Community (Alumni, Faculty, Staff and Students).
Alpha Phi Omega - Do Your Service Day: APO is organizing a day of service on Saturday November 12, 2011. There will be opportunities to volunteer at a homeless shelter, show appreciation for Bon Appetit and Aramark Workers, and participate in a variety of other service projects. This event is open to all members of the AU Community (Alumni, Faculty, Staff and Students).
World AIDS Awareness Week: The Center for Community Engagement & Service will explore the issue of inequity in the HIV/AIDS community. The theme for the 2011 World AIDS Awareness Week is: Access to proper resources and its impact on the HIV/AIDS Community! There are several scheduled events, which are list below:
Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service: On Saturday, January 21st the CCES celebrates the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a day of service to the local community. AU volunteers work with community partners to serve in some of the District’s underserved communities. This event provides the AU community with an opportunity deepen its knowledge and understanding of the issues that plague local residents. This event is open to all members of the AU community (Alumni, Faculty, Staff and Students).
Black History Month: In February the Center for Community Engagement & Service collaborates with several student groups to facilitate a community service event for the AU Community. . This event is open to all members of the AU Community (Alumni, Faculty, Staff and Students).
Dr. Seuss Day: In March the Center for Community Engagement & Service celebrates literacy by sending volunteers into DC public elementary school to read to youth on Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The event normally runs from 10:00am-12:00pm and is open to all members of the AU Community.
The AU Community Service Coalition is an umbrella organization that works to plan, publicize and participate in a variety of service activities across our region. All campus clubs and organizations are welcome to join the Coalition that is dedicated to fighting for social, environmental, and economic justice as well as making service a lasting part of our American University community.
