Many students have questions about sexual health and how to remain healthy while sexually active or are seeking information on how to avoid pressures to become sexually active. The Wellness Center can provide unbiased scientific information about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), contraception (including barrier methods of contraception and hormonal / non-hormonal contraception), abortion, alternatives to abortion, waiting for sex, and sexual decision-making.
Concerning Getting Tested
It is important to remember that there is no single test for every STD. You must ask for comprehensive STD testing!
The Student Health Center can provide comprehensive STD testing at a significantly lower cost than other community resources.
In most cases, you will not be able to find completely free comprehensive STD testing:
- Clinics which advertise free testing usually only provide a few specific tests free (usually OraQuick, the oral swab to test for HIV), gonorrhea, and Chlamydia.
- Testing for Herpes (Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and 2) involves an expensive blood draw that is discounted at the AU Student Health Center
This is a significant savings, even compared to Planned Parenthood, which charges up to $220 for comprehensive STD testing.
If you have a partner who is not an AU student, there are options in and near DC to get tested together:
- Whitman Walker Clinic
- Planned Parenthood
