Accessing Your AU E-mail using Entourage

Faculty and Staff Instructions



Gathering the Required Configuration Information

Before you configure Entourage, you will need to know the name of your AU e-mail server.

  1. Log into the my.american.edu Web portal. 
  2. Click the TECHNOLOGY link and select the MY CONTEXT AND INCOMING MAIL SERVER link. 
  3. Please write down your incoming mail server, since it will be one of AU's seven mail servers.
  4. You may need to contact the Help Desk to determine if your mail is on a mail server that allows IMAP connections.

 

Configuring Entourage

  1. Open ENTOURAGE
  2. Select ACCOUNTS from the TOOLS menu. 
  3. Click the NEW button. 
  4. Click the CONFIGURE ACCOUNT MANUALLY button at the bottom of the window. 
  5. Select IMAP from the ACCOUNT TYPE drop-down menu. Then, click OK.

  6. Enter a description for the account in the ACCOUNT NAME field, such as, AU e-mail). 
  7. Enter your FULL NAME and your E-MAIL ADDRESS in the format of username@american.edu or firstname.lastname@american.edu
  8. Type your USER NAME in the ACCOUNT ID field. 
  9. Enter your INCOMING SERVER that you wrote down from the portal in the IMAP SERVER field. 
  10. Enter mailout.american.edu for your SMTP SERVER
  11. Click on the button marked CLICK HERE FOR ADVANCED RECEIVING OPTIONS in the RECEIVING MAIL section. Then, check the box for THIS IMAP SERVICE REQUIRES A SECURE CONNECTION (SSL)
  12. Click outside of the floating window to close it. 
  13. Click on the button marked CLICK HERE FOR ADVANCED RECEIVING OPTIONS in the SENDING MAIL section. Then, check the boxes for SMTP SERVICE REQUIRES SECURE CONNECTION (SSL), OVERRIDE DEFAULT SMTP PORT, and SMTP SERVER REQUIRES AUTHENTICATION
  14. Enter 465 in the field to OVERRIDE DEFAULT SMTP PORT
  15. Click outside of the floating window to close it. 
  16. Click OK to close the E-mail Account window. 
  17. Enter your PASSWORD and click OK. Your mail will start to download. 
  18. Close the Accounts window.

 

Tips

  1. If are not able to log into your AU e-mail, log in to my.american.edu, click on the TECHNOLOGY link, and then click SYNCHRONIZE MY PASSWORDS. Wait ten minutes and your problem should be resolved.
  2. If you still experience login problems, try changing the short version of your user name to your complete name with a space between the First and Last names. For example, if someone with the user name smith tries to login to IMAP, the server will see several people with the last name of Smith and it will not know who to select. If Smith logs in with the full name John Smith, the server will find only a single match.
