In summer 2008, the Office of Information Technology simplified the campus-wide wireless connection process by creating a network that both eliminated the requirement to enter an encryption key and made the wireless network visible when you view available wireless networks.
To simplify that transition, we kept the old network name, EagleWLAN, active for the 2008-2009 academic year, but EagleWLAN will be retired at the end of the spring 2009 semester.
Effective May 10, you will no longer be able to connect to the EagleWLAN network. You will, instead, connect to the new eaglenet wireless network; its name (or SSID) is eaglenet.
To connect to eaglenet:
- Select the option to view available wireless networks on your computer.
- Select eaglenet from the list.
- If you get a warning that this wireless network is unsecured, disregard it and select the option to connect.
- No security key is necessary--you need only login to Cisco Clean Access (as usual) to perform the health check.
To check which wireless network name you are currently connecting to, follow these steps:
- In Windows: Hold your mouse over the wireless icon (near the clock), at the bottom right of your screen. It will briefly show the name of the network.
- On a Macintosh: Click the Airport icon at the top right of your screen, where you’ll find a check mark next to the network to which you are connected.

Faculty and staff can create a temporary visitor account for campus guests, by using the Visitor Account Creation link under the Technology section of the my.american.edu portal. Guests can then use the wired and wireless network infrastructure.
