Workstation Encryption for AU-Owned Computers

Do you store confidential data on your laptop? No matter how cautious and responsible you are, there is always a risk of a laptop being lost or stolen. If there is confidential data stored on that lost or stolen laptop, American University may be liable under specific regulations. Additionally, the exposure might lead to AU being in the headlines (not the kind of press we want), reputational damage, exorbitant recovery costs, and expose individuals to the risk of identity theft. To reduce this risk, the Office of Information Technology provides a whole-disk encryption software solution. PGP is the whole disk encryption solution for AU-owned Windows and Macintosh computers.

The American University IT Security Policy states that mobile devices with confidential data use an encryption method to protect the data. Read the Security Policy for more information.

Please contact the IT Help Desk at 202-885-2550, helpdesk@american.edu, or AskAmericanUHelp to request that your workstation be encrypted.
