Free and Open Productivity Suite
OpenOffice.org provides a free open source alternative for anyone who does not want to pay for a commercial suite like Microsoft Office, or prefers to use an open-source platform-independent set of applications. OpenOffice.org includes: a word processor, a spreadsheet, and a presentation application. The interface for these applications will generally be familiar to you, as it is very similar to Microsoft Office.
- OpenOffice.org is free open source software that is platform-independent, so it runs on the Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Solaris, and FreeBSD operating systems.
- OpenOffice.org can open and edit Microsoft Office documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. It can also save files in a variety of formats, including Adobe PDF.
- OpenOffice.org saves files in the OASIS OpenDocument format by default, which is an international standard for platform-independent office software. This means that anyone can develop new software, for any operating system, that can read files saved in the OpenDocument format.
OpenOffice.org File Formats and Compatibility
Our recommendation for OpenOffice.org users is to use the default OpenDocument format, but you may want to save a copy in the Microsoft Office format, or the Adobe PDF format, before sharing a file with others who may not use the OpenOffice.org suite.
If you do decide to download and use OpenOffice.org, it is important to understand the differences between OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Office. Microsoft Office will not open files created in the default OpenOffice.org format at this time, but OpenOffice.org can save files in the Microsoft Office format.
