  • Admission to the Program:

In addition to meeting the minimum university requirements for graduate study (minimum grade point average of 3.00), applicants must have completed nine or more undergraduate courses in dance, theatre, music, or visual arts, one-third of which must be advanced work or it's equivalent. Equivalent training is understood to be four or more years' experience in a professional company or organization. An interview is strongly encouraged and required for those not meeting academic requirements. Two letters of recommendation are required. Provisional admission may be granted and is removed at the completion of 12 credit hours of work in the department with a grade point average of 3.00.

A GRE score is required by the university. The program has no minimum score requirement. The DPA simply must have a score on file. Individuals with 8 years or greater professional experience may request to have the GRE requirement waived. Admission to the program is competitive, and enrollment is limited to 15-18 students per academic year.

 
 
  • Degree Requirements:

45 credit hours of approved graduate work.

A four-hour comprehensive examination covering three areas: arts management, administration, and an art area of specialization.

Advancement to candidacy after completion of comprehensive exam.

A capstone project: Master's Thesis (PERF-797), Directed Research (PERF-793), or Master's Portfolio (PERF-702).

  • Electives:

Two electives in non-managerial arts-related topics.

Four electives in managerial topics (e.g. strategic planning, public/private partnerships, organizational behavior, etc.).

*to be determined in consultation with advisor. Electives may be taken in any college at the university, including School of Public Affairs, KOGOD School of Business, and Washington College of Law.

 

     
Graduate Certificate in Arts Management
 
  • Admission to the Program:

Applicants should meet the minimum university requirements for graduate study. Students are encouraged, but not required, to schedule an interview with the program director.

Admission to the program is competitive, and enrollment is limited to 3-4 students per academic year.

 
  • Certificate Requirements:
15 credit hours of approved graduate study

Combined BA/MA program in Arts Management
 
  • Description:
The combined BA/MA degree is designed for undergraduate students pursuing a bachelor’s degree at American University. The undergraduate degree can be in any field. Application to the combined BA/MA must be made by February of the student’s junior year, minimum requirements are a 3.0 GPA and, 9 credits of advanced (300 level or higher) coursework in one or more of the arts disciplines (must be completed by the end of the junior year).

An overlap of undergraduate with master’s coursework allows the student to complete both degrees within five and a half years. The program is designed to work with each student’s goals, so the overlap is determined in consultation with your arts management advisor. Once accepted into the program, each student meets with the Director of Arts Management to begin planning her/his coursework.
