How many theatre productions are students able to perform?

The Department of Performing Arts produces 4 mainstage theatre shows per school year. During any 4 years, our students have the opportunity to do a wide range of shows, from traditional book musicals, to contemporary and original musicals-from classics such as the Greeks, Shakespeare and Moliere, to original contemporary works from Shepherd, Ives, Gurney, Williams.

What other opportunities do students have to participate?

From A.U. Players, to A.U. in Motion, students produce, direct, write, choreograph, design, and perform in these companies. In addition to participation from performing arts majors and minors, these companies draw students from all across the campus and from many disciplines. They perform to packed houses!

What is the Greenberg Theatre?

The new 300-seat Greenberg Theatre on Wisconsin Avenue is state of the art. It is in a thriving section of the city-accessible to campus, to restaurants and metro. This will be home to many outstanding seasons of events in the years to come. American University recently celebrated the theatre's fifth anniversary in 2007.

What have some of our recent theatre graduates gone on to do?

Alumni from the class of '02 are working at the Folger Shakespeare Library school touring company, Folger Consort, studio Theatre, The National Players National Tour. Alumni from past years have completed M. F. A.'s in theatre. They teach theatre, perform with Second City, tour in children's theatre, appear in films, work in law, work as dramaturges, directors, designers, and literary managers. Some have started their own professional theatre companies.

What options are available at AU for students aspiring to teach theatre?

Students who wish to teach theatre can apply through the school of education to obtain a certificate to teach theatre K-12. This involves a semester of03/11/2008atre and in the A.U. school of education. Recent graduates have headed drama programs at Damascus, Walt Whitman, and Churchill high schools in the D.C. metro area. They've also run drama programs and educational theatre companies in New York, New Jersey, Michigan, and Florida.

Can non-majors audition for theatre productions and get involved in theatre groups?

WE HAVE AN OPEN CASTING POLICY! You don't have to be a major or minor to get involved! The program is constantly refreshed by new faces and new ideas.

Can students get involved with technical theatre and behind-the-scenes experiences?

Our student stage managers and technical theatre students gain terrific hands-on experience and get work! There are lots of opportunities in stage management and technical theatre. Current students and alums earn money in D.C.'s thriving theatre community.

Can learning in the nation's capital offer students any special opportunities?

Washington D.C. is a large, diverse and exciting theatre community -- many of our stduents graduate with professional experience on their resumes and get work! Through internships, referrals, and recommendations, most of our seniors graduate with at least one professional credit on their resume. Washington has 80 working professional theatres. In Fall of '02, A.U. students performed on the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage (which was nationally simulcast) to kick off the "Prelude Festival of New Plays." In past years, juniors and seniors have performed at the Shakespeare Theatre, Source Theatre Company, and Gala Hispanic Theatre in paid professional roles.
