"Studio Acoustics"
Presented by John Storyk, The Walters/Storyk Design Group
November 18, 8:00 p.m.
@ Kreeger Building, Room 109

Part of the 2004 Meeting of the AUDIO ENGINEERING SOCIETY, Washington, D.C., Section/American Univ. Student Section

A simple twist of fate led architect John Storyk to a 30+ year career as one of the world's pre-eminent recording studio designers and acousticians. In 1968, after graduating from Princeton, Storyk found work as a carpenter for a rock club in NYC's East Village. A chance meeting with Jimi Hendrix led to a commission to design Electric Lady for the rock legend. It remains one of NY's most successful recording studios to this day. Storyk and the Walters-Storyk Design Group which he coowns with his wife, interior designer Beth Walters, have gone on to create over 1400 media production facilities in the U.S., Europe, the Far East and South America. (www.wsdg.com) WSDG credits range from the multi-million dollar Synchrosound complex in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Argentina's Circo Beat Studios to film composer Carter Burwell's Tribeca NY studio(Raising Arizona, Being John Malkovich); the cuttingedge Interlochen, MI, Public Radio complex; Thirteen/WNET NY's 5.1 audio suite; hip hop guru Tim Mosley's new Timbaland Studios; distance-learning facilities for NY's Hunter College and the experimental Ross School in East Hampton, NY; high-end home theaters for such clients as Richard Gere and Clive Davis; and the Jazz At Lincoln Center performance complex in NYC's new Time Warner building. John Storyk frequently lectures on design and acoustics at universities around the U.S. A five-time winner of the prestigious TEC Award for outstanding achievement in Acoustics/Facility Design, WSDG maintains offices in NYC; Highland, NY; Miami, FL; Basel, Switzerland; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
