Much Ado About Nothing
January 23, 8:00 p.m., open house rehearsal
February 5-7, 12-14, 8:00 p.m.
February 7, 2:00 p.m., "Shake 'N Saturday" youth matinee

American University's Department of Performing Arts (DPA) presents HIP HOP MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, adapted and directed by Caleen Sinnette Jennings. This innovative production of William Shakespeare's MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING offers a contemporary take on the classic play. Jennings has transformed the world of Shakespeare's court into a lively hip hop club, complete with dance mix created by the popular DJ Moose. The production examines the battle of the sexes within hip hop culture through the lens of Shakespeare's famous witty comedy.

The Friday, February 6th performance will be followed by the DPA's First Friday series. Renaissance scholar Dr. Anita Sherman will moderate a panel featuring Dr. James Carroll, former Helen Hayes Award Judge; Dr. Jeanne Addison Roberts, Shakespeare scholar; and Dr. William Smith, ethnomusicologist and musician. The discussion will explore the many perspectives from which theatre can be interpreted and experienced, especially in the context of adaptations such as hip hop Shakespeare. The AU Library will feature a lobby display of the playbills Dr. Carroll has collected during his many years of theatre attendance all over the country.

The Saturday, February 7th matinee is open to the public. There will be a post show discussion for young people in attendance, featuring the director and some of the actors from the production. This adaptation offers students a unique opportunity to experience Shakespeare in a non-traditional way. Please call the box office at (202) 885-2587 for group sales.

Liz Lerman Dance Exchange
Scores for Salt and Snow: Dances Since 2002

May 22, 8:00 p.m.
May 23, 2:00 p.m.

Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, sponsored in collaboration with American University, presents Scores for Salt and Snow: Dances Since 2002, an evening of hauntingly whispered, thought-provoking repertory dance work at the Greenberg Theater/American University.

Two of the repertory's works are from 2002. Dances at a Cocktail Party is performed within a score by Leonard Bernstein and Uneasy Dances moves through a score composed by Alan Hovhaness, Spike Jones, and Andy Teirstein. Both pieces were originally commissioned by the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center for their Age of Anxiety Festival at a time when anxiety became palpable. Conceived and developed in reaction to the events of September 11, Dances at a Cocktail Party and Uneasy Dances stand as deeply personal kinetic investigations of the edge of laughter and tears, an arrested gasp and sigh of pleasure.

"An artists job is to help people transform the experience [of September 11, 2001]," said Liz Lerman who was with the working with artists of the Dance Exchange and community participants in Detroit/Ann Arbor on that day. "The project inevitably took on the color and questioning of the uneasy period in all our lives."
The company's third, and newest work in this concert, Nature/Nurture: Environment and Character, explores the effects of character on environment…and vice versa. Nature/Nurture carries you from an intimate, almost sacred, inner world dusted with translucent white paper to extroverted settings populated by memories of Martha Wittman's Irish Great-Aunts (Salt Pieces) and Peter DiMuro's Funny Uncle.

Looking for an evening of compelling dance by one of the country's top 15 modern dance companies that just happens to have its studios here in the DC-area?
Come. Spend a few hours with Liz Lerman Dance Exchange.

For more information about this performance, contact Chuck Schneiderhan at 301.270.6700, x 11 or chucks@danceexchange.org.
