Dr. Gail Short Hanson is Vice President of Campus Life at American University in Washington, DC. She provides senior executive leadership for 13 departments that support student learning and development. She currently represents AU on the policy committee of the Patriot League athletic conference and chairs AU's Community Liaison Committee.
Dr. Hanson has spent more than 35 years in higher education administration, including 14 years as dean of students at The George Washington University, where she received a George Washington Award for outstanding contributions to the university. Prior to coming to AU, Dr. Hanson was an organizational consultant in the Office of Postsecondary Education at the U.S. Department of Education, where her unit won the Secretary’s Quality Reinvention Award.
Dr. Hanson is a past president of the National Association for Women in Education (NAWE) and recipient of the Association’s awards for educational leadership and for distinguished service. She served on the editorial board of the NASPA Journal about Women in Higher Education and was named a Pillar of the Profession by the NASPA Foundation in 2011. Dr. Hanson also is an emerita member of the Board of Directors of Susquehanna University. She earned her B.A. from the University of Wisconsin and holds an M.Ed. and an M.Phil. and Ph.D. in sociology from The George Washington University.
