President Sylvia M. Burwell speaks on the violent and tragic events in Charlottesville

August 13, 2017

The American University community stands in solidarity with the City of Charlottesville. Yesterday's tragic and violent events remind us that those values we cherish, including diversity, inclusion, mutual respect, and freedom of expression and dissent, must be carefully protected, especially from those who would use violence and fear as weapons.

Hate, bigotry, and violence are not American values. We reject them, and they have no place at American University or in our society.

We extend our condolences to the victims and their families. During this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are affected.

Sylvia M. Burwell
President
