President's Message | Reports & Announcements

April 16, 2013

 TO: American University Community
 FROM: Neil Kerwin, President
SUBJECT: Tragedy at the Boston Marathon

We are saddened by the tragedy that occurred in Boston yesterday. Our thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones, and all those who have been injured or affected by this dreadful act.

We know many AU students, their families, and alumni live in the Boston area, and many in the AU community may have family or friends who have been affected. We are holding a vigil today at 5:00 p.m. at the Kay Spiritual Life Center. All are welcome.

Our chaplains are available to speak with those in need of support. Please know you can also reach out to the Counseling Center at 202-885-3500 or Resident students can also speak with their resident advisors or housing staff members.

The country went on heightened alert due to the nature of the event and reports about the nature of the act. AU’s Department of Public Safety has been coordinating with law enforcement partners in the National Capital Region, and conducting extra patrols throughout campus since yesterday. Now and always, AU community members should be aware of suspicious packages and/or persons, and report any suspicious activity to AU DPS or their appropriate local law enforcement authority. Suspicious activity can be reported by calling AU DPS at 202-885-3636, or the Metropolitan Police Department at 202-727-9099, or online at

During this difficult time, I ask that if you see someone in need of support, please reach out.
