|FROM:||Neil Kerwin, President|
|SUBJECT:||Today's Earthquake Response and Assessment
Following today’s earthquake, we want to review the current situation and provide advice in the event of aftershocks.
First, every structure on campus and within the purview of the university (including campus and commercial property) has been assessed. All structures have been determined to be safe. No structural damage and no injuries have been reported. All scheduled activities will continue this evening as planned.
Second, we want to remind you of our emergency preparedness guidelines: www.american.edu/emergency/upload/Earthquake-Preparedness.pdf. In the event of a serious aftershock, please follow these guidelines.
Third, we will continue to use all available communication vehicles to communicate any new developments, as appropriate. These include AU Campus Connect (commonly referred to as RAVE text alerts), www.american.edu, and AU’s Facebook and Twitter feeds. Earlier today, we experienced an initial delay in the delivery of SMS text messages (including RAVE) and mobile phone service, but email, land lines, and the Web site continued as normal. This serves as a reminder that redundancy in our communications is useful. If you do not receive updates through one source, check another. New students, faculty, and staff may sign up for our emergency text alerts at https://www.getrave.com/login/american.
Finally, I want to thank the entire community for your patient and calm response to the evacuations and disruptions in normal activity while we assessed our facilities. As always, you can prepare for an emergency by reviewing our emergency preparedness Web site at www.american.edu/emergency.
