TO: Campus Community
FROM: Cornelius Kerwin, Interim President
SUBJECT: 2006 University Awards for Faculty, Staff, Students, and Alumni

I am pleased to announce the launch of the 2006 University Awards process. You are encouraged to nominate colleagues and worthy individuals who have made significant contributions to AU and whose actions are consistent with the high standards for the awards. Detailed information on the awards, selection criteria, and deadlines is available on the university awards Web site,

There have been several significant changes to the awards process:

  • Faculty: Criteria for the Faculty Awards have been updated, and two awards have been relocated. The Innovative Use of Technology in Teaching Award will now be administered by the Center for Teaching Excellence, and the Outstanding Teaching in the General Education Award will be handled by the General Education Program. Criteria for two other awards have been absorbed into the remaining faculty awards.

  • Staff: Nominations for Staff Awards can now be completed via the my.american portal.

  • Students: All five categories of Student Awards include a cash prize.

  • Each award will now be accompanied by a cash prize, ranging from $250 to $5,000. Previously, only the Scholar/Teacher of the Year and Bender Prize (for faculty), the President’s Award (to a graduating senior), and the Staff Awards were funded. Funding for the University Awards signifies a renewed commitment to reward examples of excellence within the AU community.

  • The University Awards website has been redesigned and the application process streamlined.

Awards will be presented on the following dates:

  • Faculty Awards: April 23, Faculty Recognition Dinner

  • Student Awards: May 13, Honors Convocation

  • President’s Award: May 14, Commencement

  • Staff Awards: May 23, Staff Appreciation Week

  • Alumni Awards: October 21, Alumni Weekend Cocktail Reception

The strides American University has made in recent years are the result of hard work, dedication, and a commitment to excellence exhibited by so many. Please help us to acknowledge those who have been instrumental in making this a better place to learn, work, and live.
