We are pleased to announce the beginning of the search process for the position of provost of American University. 

The search committee and the president met on November 6 and have since developed the attached announcement that will appear in all of the prominent venues in which such advertisements routinely appear—the Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Education, Diverse Issues in Higher Education, Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education, Women in Higher Education, the New York Times, and the Washington Post. 

We are dedicated to a broad, national search that will lead to the appointment of the very best person for this critically important position. We welcome the participation of the entire campus in making this decision by helping to identify the qualities and characteristics which the provost should have, to attract a pool of outstanding candidates, and to assist in the review of finalists when they come to campus.  

The search committee will be assisted in its work by an executive search firm, the selection of which will be announced shortly before the Thanksgiving holiday. Other information regarding the search process will be communicated in due course, but we urge all members of the community to review the position announcement, nominate individuals suitable for consideration, and inform colleagues elsewhere who might be interested in applying for the position or in making a nomination. PROVOST

American University invites nominations and applications for the position of provost. 

Chartered by an Act of Congress in 1893, American University is an independent coeducational university with approximately 12,000 students. Slightly over half of its students are undergraduates; slightly under half are enrolled in master’s, doctoral, and professional degree programs. Located in northwest Washington, D.C., the university attracts students from all 50 states and nearly 150 foreign countries. The provost is the chief academic officer and reports to the president. The provost provides leadership to the six schools and colleges, as well as to the University Library, the Washington Semester and AU Abroad programs, the Center for Teaching Excellence, the Office of Enrollment Services, the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment, the Office of Sponsored Programs, the University Registrar, and the Career Center. The provost will play a leading role in the final development of a new university strategic plan and bear primary responsibility for the implementation of its academic components.
