Academic Director, Transforming Communities, Washington Semester Program

Katharine Kravetz developed and teaches the Transforming Communities Semester, linking public policy to issues affecting communities. She previously taught Justice in the Washington Semester Program and served as the Director of American University’s study abroad programs for four years. She has taught and written on community-based and experiential learning and community safety. Before coming to the Washington Semester Program, Professor Kravetz served for many years as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Justice, Law and Society, where she won the Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award.
Professor Kravetz is a lawyer who has practiced privately and as a staff attorney with the District of Columbia Public Defender Service. She is a graduate of Harvard University (BA, magna cum laude with highest honors) where she received the History Prize, and the Georgetown University Law School. She was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Iran.
