Jennifer Bakalar

Intern Clinician Counseling Center

Jen is a pre-doctoral clinical intern at the AU Counseling Center. She is also a Ph.D. candidate in Medical & Clinical Psychology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, MD. Her previous clinical experience includes psychotherapy and psychological assessment with children, adolescents, and adults at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Adult Inpatient Psychiatry Service, the DCVA, National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the Psychiatric Institute of Washington, and the AU Counseling Center Externship program. Prior to starting graduate school in 2010, Jen completed a post-baccalaureate fellowship in Child Psychiatry at NIMH after earning a B.A. from Cornell University. Jen’s therapeutic approach is grounded primarily in contemporary psychodynamic and relational theories with an integration of cognitive behavioral and existential techniques. Her special interests include posttraumatic stress and trauma survivorship, moral injury, life transitions and adjustment, multicultural identity development and attachment over the lifespan, links between stress and health-related behaviors, and psychotherapeutic processes.
