Elyas Abubakr

International Student Advisor

• As an International Student Advisor in the International Student and Scholar Services, Elyas functions as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternative Responsible Officer (ARO) to provide immigration and cultural advice to F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors. Elyas's primary focus areas are intercultural programming, which includes leading International Student Leadership Team, ISSS web management, social media outreach, retention efforts and international student orientation. In addition, Elyas plays a major role in ISSS admissions, employment and SEVIS reporting areas. As a State Department exchange alumnus, he has had the opportunity of promoting youth development and assisting with international educational initiatives and recruitment for exchange programs. Previously, he has worked with American Councils for International Education, Counterpart International and USAID in the field of civic and electoral education. Elyas has worked in various roles in ISSS since the summer of 2008.
