Helen (Hye) joined American University as the first Zero Waste Coordinator in January 2012. Her job encompasses planning, implementing, tracking, and reporting all aspects of waste diversion and waste reduction operations on campus to achieve the university's Zero Waste policy.
Before joining as a full time staff, Helen worked with AU as a Sustainability Intern since 2008. She worked with both Facilities Management and the Office of Sustainability working on various sustainability programs. To highlight, she managed documenting and tracking the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) pilot and supported documenting various sustainability commitments & systems including STARS, LEED, and the greenhouse gas inventory for the President's Climate Commitment.
Helen studied Environmental Science and Technology at the University of Maryland where she did her senior capstone on "Anaerobic Digestion and Treatment Wetland Design for Treating Source-Separated Latrine, Black Water, and Grey Water from a Medical Complex in Haiti."
