Office of Sponsored Programs
James is responsible for the direction and management of all pre-award and non-financial post award grant and contract administration operations. He provides leadership in developing policies and procedures to ensure institutional compliance, and integrates national best practices into all AU policies and procedures related to sponsored programs. Research administration training initiatives like the RAC and Fundamentals programs are critical to increasing AU sponsored research capacity in the future.
James possesses over 20 years of university research management experience, encompassing sponsored research management and re-engineering, contracting, industry and international collaboration, and compliance. During his career he has been associated with a variety of universities, including Northwestern University and the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He was a core faculty member in the Rush University M.S. in Research Administration Program. James has given research administration presentations in 14 countries. For nearly ten years he has served as a NIH/NIAID peer reviewer, particularly for large center grants in the HIV/AIDS area.
A long-time NCURA contributor, his service includes two terms on the Board of Directors, Editor of the Research Management Review, and Senior Editor/Senior co-Editor/co-Editor of the NCURA Magazine. He is a 2009 recipient of the NCURA Distinguished Service Award. He is a past member of the UIDP Executive Board, and is or has been involved in projects convened by the National Academies and AAAS.
In the legal profession, he is the immediate past president of the State Bar of Wisconsin Nonresident Lawyers Division and a member of the Executive Committee of the Wisconsin Bar Board of Governors. He was elected a Life Fellow of the Wisconsin Law Foundation in 2015 and was admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court Bar in 2017.
