IMAJ: Political Science
Deon Jones is a junior majoring in political science at American University in Washington, DC, where he is a member of the School of Public Affairs Leadership Program and a Harry S. Truman Scholarship Nominee.
He currently serves as a National Spokesperson at the Campaign for Youth Justice, an organization dedicated to ending the practice of trying, sentencing, and incarcerating youth under 18 in the adult criminal justice system.
He is also the founder and facilitator of the Manifest Leadership Institute, a leadership program that caters to the academic and personal development of formerly incarcerated youth.
Locally, on Nov. 2, 2010, Deon was elected to the DC Advisory Neighborhood Commission making him, at age 19, one of the youngest elected officials in the country and the youngest in Washington, DC. The DC Advisory Neighborhood Commissions are bodies that advise the District government on issues affecting their local areas. He was also Treasurer of the Commission, which gave him the opportunity to advise the DC government on their annual budget. His term ended in January 2013.
While serving on the ANC and at CFYJ, he interned at the White House in the Office of the Vice President during Fall 2012.
Previously, Deon was a Campus Coordinator for Teach for America where he was in charge of building awareness of educational inequity and TFA's work on American University's campus.
While at TFA, he was also a Congressional Black Caucus Emerging Leader in the office of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand working on issues regarding urban education reform and black male achievement.
Before joining TFA, Deon was an intern in the office of Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney assisting legislative aides on multiple projects. He also served as a student leader on DC Mayor-elect Vince Gray’s Transition Team addressing education issues under the leadership of Katherine Bradley and Michael Lomax.
Prior to joining the office of Congresswoman Maloney, Deon served as Director of Student Affairs and office assistant to City Councilman Scott Vaughan in Atlanta, GA. He served as the councilman's primary liaison to students in high school and assisted eligible students with voter registration increasing the number of youth voters by 30%.
He is a member of the Board of Directors at America's Promise Alliance.
He has been a speaker at the 55th United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, the College Democrats of America National Conference, and the College Democrats Black Caucus, the NEXUS Global Youth Summit, and the FRANK Summit.
Deon attends the Greater Mount Calvary Holy Church under the leadership of Bishop Alfred A. and Co-Pastor Susie Owens in Washington, DC.
