Marseille

The major port of France has had a flourishing trade since the Greek merchants of Phocaea settled there six centuries before our era. Marseille, once the "Door to the East", became a melting pot of races and civilizations. Located between the Mediterranean and the Hills its territory is twice as large as Paris. In Marseille soccer is just as vital as the air you breathe, and the Olympic de Marseille is the city’s flag. Overlooking the harbor from a height of 162 meters, the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde surmounted by a golden statue of the Virgin, named the "Good Mother", is the symbol of the city.
