Starting Out

AU is committed to providing the structure and environment for undergraduates to succeed in scholarly research, creative endeavor, and professional development.

CAS and SIS both provide a hub of resources for students looking to hone their skills. The University Library, too, is an excellent resource.

The Office of Merit Awards assists students pursuing nationally competitive awds and offers for sophomores the Early Identification Program, which prepares them for Rhodes Scholarships, Marshall Scholarships, Truman Scholarships, Boren Scholarships, Fulbright Grants, and Goldwater Scholarships, among others.

Many majors offer courses in research and research methodology, and AU offers seven learning communities—each with their own mission—that equip first-year students to start down the path of undergraduate research. Talented sophomores will soon be able apply to programs that result in Honors in their major or field.
