Please join President Kerwin, the President's Council, students, faculty colleagues, and me for the university’s Opening Convocation this Friday, August 22, 2014.
Opening Convocation is an annual tradition where faculty and staff welcome with great cheer AU’s new undergraduate students. The event serves as a significant milestone for new students, symbolizing their transition from one stage of their academic lives and entry into higher education.
In festive AU tradition, Opening Convocation will begin with a bagpiper-led student procession from the Friedman Quad, through Glover Gate, and to Bender Arena. At Bender, students will be greeted with applause by faculty and staff as they enter into the AU community of scholars and process to the arena floor. Faculty are welcomed to attend the one-hour program that follows, which will include remarks by the platform party and a brief keynote address by Professor Max Paul Friedman, the 2014 Scholar/ Teacher of the Year.
Faculty and staff will meet in the lobby of Bender Arena at 10:30 a.m. To make the event more festive, the AU community is encouraged to show school spirit by wearing red, white, or blue clothing (or AU apparel) and to post welcome messages to the Class of 2018 on social media (#AUWelcome). Welcome messages will be posted on social media and will be displayed on Bender Arena screens prior to the ceremony.
This special event has contributed to many warm and lasting memories held by the previous classes. By joining us at Bender Arena, you will help make this year’s Opening Convocation a banner welcome event for the university’s largest incoming class.
I look forward to seeing you on Friday.
