|SUBJECT:||Appointment of Dr. Barbara Romzek as Dean of the School of Public Affairs|
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Barbara Romzek as Dean of the School of Public Affairs, effective July 1, 2012. Dr. Romzek joins AU from the University of Kansas where she is a Professor of Public Affairs and Administration. She holds a BA from Oakland University, MA from Western Michigan University, and PhD in Political Science from the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Romzek is recognized nationally as an expert in the area of public management and accountability, with emphases on government reform, contracting, and network service delivery. She has co-authored three books and over forty journal articles, book chapters, and other publications. Dr. Romzek is a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and is the recipient of research awards from both the American Society for Public Administration and the American Political Science Association. Her service to professional organizations has included leadership on governing boards and committees of the Academy of Management, American Political Science Association, American Society for Public Administration, Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences, National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration, and Public Management Research Association.
The experience that Dr. Romzek will bring to the SPA deanship is comprehensive. She has extensive leadership experience at the University of Kansas, most recently as Interim Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and previously as Chair of the Department of Public Administration and Associate Dean and Interim Dean for the College of Liberal Arts. In addition to these leadership appointments, Dr. Romzek fulfilled university-wide assignments that included managing the University of Kansas Strategic Planning Process and chairing the institution’s reaccreditation steering committee.
Dr. Romzek’s record and standing within the academic community is a welcome asset that will build upon an impressive SPA foundation created under the leadership of Dean William LeoGrande. I want to thank the Search Committee, and its chair Robert Durant, for their efforts during this entire process. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Romzek to American University.
