New CTRL Grant Opportunities

*** THESE COMPETITIONS HAVE NOW CLOSED ***

CTRL is proud to announce two new funding opportunities for AU faculty. Both are pilot programs, and both are Spring 2012 initiatives.

The Teaching Enhancement Program is for small expenditures (up to $75) that will improve student learning in the context of a single course.

  • Funds may be used for such purposes as honoraria for outside speakers or materials that are “used up” during the course (e.g., short-term subscription to online teaching tools, special supplies for a science or arts course that doesn’t have a lab fee).
  • Materials that are durable (e.g., books, DVDs) become the property of the university, though they can be used by the recipients for subsequent course offerings.
  • Grants are not designed to support faculty research or conference attendance.
  • Grants cannot be used for food.
  • Download application here.

The Ideas Incubator Program makes awards of up to $500 for projects leading to classroom innovation. The awards, which can be made to individuals or to faculty teams, are designed to reshape teaching strategies (i.e., not just applying to a single course).

  • Funds may be used for such purposes as purchasing hardware or software, developing new teaching materials, or reworking pedagogical formats.
  • Durable materials become the property of the university, but can be used by the recipients as long as needed.
  • The Ideas Incubator Program is distinct from Curriculum Development Grants (offered under the auspices of the Dean of Academic Affairs). CTRL program awards are smaller in scope. They are also designed to foster “out of the box” thinking that might contribute to further curriculum-oriented developments (e.g., adoption by other colleagues, applications for external funding).
  • Download application here.

Since available funding is limited, both programs are competitive. We also encourage faculty to check with other campus resources (including the University Library, the Social Science Research Lab in CTRL, and individual home academic departments and divisions) to see if the project they are designing is fundable from alternative sources.

We anticipate awarding up to 70 Teaching Enhancement grants and up to 6 Ideas Incubator grants. All applications are due by Monday, November 14. We hope to announce winners by Friday, December 9. Awards must be used in full (and all receipts for reimbursement received in CTRL) by April 1, 2012.

Downloadable applications for the Teaching Enhancement Program and for the Ideas Incubator Program are available above. If you have questions, please contact Julie Spaeth (spaeth@american.edu or 202-885-2117).

We look forward to your creative ideas!
