You Can Support Graduate Education at American University
Graduate education at American University transforms the lives of its students. In turn, graduates of AU transform communities, both nationally and internationally. This enables students to access emerging career possibilities, professional development and opportunities to lead, teach and generate knowledge. AU’s longstanding traditions of social engagement, public service and fostering understanding between nations are its foundations for excellence in graduate education.
Imagine how many lives you can positively impact when you support the aspirations of an outstanding graduate student at American University.
Your support will ensure that more students will be able to experience AU’s nationally-recognized, high-quality graduate programs. Examples include:
School of International Service (SIS), ranked #8 for International Master’s Programs
School of Public Affairs (SPA), ranked #8 for the Master’s of Public Administration (MPA)
Kogod School of Business (KSB), ranked #68 for MBA Programs; and
92% of master’s program graduates are employed or pursuing an advanced degree within six months of graduation
Fellowships and scholarships have helped these students pursue and complete their research and professional development goals:
"The Dissertation Fellowship Award has been essential in helping me finish my dissertation. Finances are always tight for graduate students but I was nearing a point where I would have had to put the dissertation on hold while I worked outside of academia if I couldn’t find an additional source of funding. I didn’t want to do that because I knew it would negatively affect my chances of finishing my dissertation. This fellowship was exactly what I needed at the time that I needed it. I am grateful for the opportunities this fellowship has given me." - Keri Sikich, School of Public Affairs PhD candidate and 2013 Presidential Management Fellow (PMF).
"American University has been a fantastic experience for graduate training both in the high bar it sets for its students’ achievement but also for the high degree of support it offers. At each step of the way I was met with caring concern for my professional development, academically, personally, and financially. American University recognized what a large undertaking a doctoral degree represents. With the help of a very generous dissertation fellowship I was able to have the finances to recruit needed participants and the time to invest in my research. These financial means go a long way while you are in graduate school and it helped me complete what was a very meaningful contribution I had to offer to my field." - David McDonald, PhD, Psychology - CAS

While American University has substantial internal funding opportunities for graduate students, challenges remain in recruiting and retaining the best graduate students. We want to increase endowed funding to support the recruitment of outstanding prospective students. We also want to provide doctoral students dedicated time for research, as well as increased travel funding. Below are some specific examples of opportunities to support graduate education at American University:
Endowed scholarships and fellowships to recruit outstanding graduate students.
Doctoral fellowships to provide advanced doctoral students dedicated time for research, dissertation writing and publication.
Travel award funding, with support for international field research.
General research support.
