The mission of Graduate Studies at American University is to promote excellence in, and to assure the overall quality of graduate education, i.e., graduate students’ experiences related to both instruction and research at American University.  High quality experiences that engage students during graduate education enhance their development as the next generation of scholars and professionals in their chosen discipline.  Both masters- and doctoral-level education are central to the missions of the modern research university.  Graduate education provides many living examples of the complementary relations among the advanced teaching, mentoring and research functions of the University.  Synergies among activities in graduate education support a culture of inquiry that is disseminated globally as new knowledge that can improve the lives of others and engage new thought leaders.  Graduate Studies at AU strives to develop leadership for the University’s graduate programs, to support the teaching, research and creative goals and activities of AU’s faculty, staff, and graduate students, and to provide access to a challenging and rewarding learning community for a diverse body of highly qualified graduate applicants.  The activities of Graduate Studies focus on: improving the effectiveness of graduate education at AU via the implementation of national best practices; advocating for innovation in graduate education at the University; and the design and implementation of enhancement initiatives to maximize students’ experience of graduate education at AU.
