Student Awards

Honors students can be nominated by other students, faculty or staff, or they can self-nominate for an Honors Award. Nominations should include a brief description--of 75 words or fewer, ideally--of how and why the nominee meets the criteria for one of the following award groups:

Outstanding Honors Freshman
These students have distinguished themselves through emerging leadership and intellectual curiosity in their classes, their communities, and their extracurricular pursuits.

Outstanding Honors Sophomore, Junior, Senior, and the Scholars and Artists Award
These students’ passion for a subject—or for their studies in general—has carried over into extracurricular pursuits, and their classwork and course selections reflect a growing expertise as well as broad-ranging interests.

Students who may be considered for the highly selective Scholars and Artists Award may have presented papers or other significant projects at conferences or in other contexts on campus or beyond AU. When possible, please share details about these accomplishments.

Honors students are also eligible for the highly selective awards listed below:

Outstanding Leadership in Honors
This highly selective award recognizes Honors students who have served the Honors community with distinction while maintaining a record of high academic achievement.

Outstanding Leadership in the Community
This highly selective award recognizes Honors students who have served the AU community or other communities with distinction while maintaining a record of high academic achievement.

Faculty, Alumni and Staff Awards

Honors faculty, alumni and AU staff are also acknowledged for special contributions:

Outstanding Honors Faculty Award
These faculty have demonstrated an outstanding contribution to Honors teaching.

Honors Alumni Award
This award recognizes an Honors alumni who demonstrates an ongoing, active interest in bettering the AU Honors community or the wider campus community.

The University Honors Program also recognizes other AU faculty and staff who have made significant contributions to the University Honors Program.

If you wish to nominate an individual for a specific contribution not covered in the listed Honors Awards, please send your nomination to honors@american.edu.
