American University ranked third on the Peace Corps' list of medium-sized colleges and universities with the most Peace Corps volunteers, climbing four spots from its position on last year's list.
The university has risen consistently in the past three years, ranking seventh in 2008, eighth in 2007, and twelfth in 2006. Fifty-one AU students volunteered in the Peace Corps in 2008, bringing the schools overall total of volunteers to 769, reinforcing the university's commitment to "putting ideas into action, action into service."
Schools are ranked according to the size of the student body. Small schools are those with less than 5,000 undergraduates; medium-sized schools have between 5,001 and 15,000 undergraduates; and large schools enroll more than 15,000 undergraduates.
Founded in 1961, the Peace Corps has received almost 200,000 volunteers from more than 3,000 institutions across the United States and Puerto Rico. Currently 7,876 Peace Corps volunteers serve in 76 countries worldwide.
