Alumni Audit Registration



Graduates of American University in good financial standing with the university may enroll in one course each fall, spring, and summer semester as alumni auditors. No credit is given for courses taken through this program, and courses will not appear on student transcripts. Alumni who wish to receive credit for courses must register as non-degree students and pay tuition at the prevailing rate. Alumni auditors are expected to follow all university conduct policies.

Alumni audit is only available for courses which have not reached their enrollment limits. The alumni audit program application can be accessed from the alumni audit webpage. In-person registration is available at the Alumni Programs office on the fifth floor of 4200 Wisconsin Avenue, above the Greenberg Theatre. The Alumni Audit fee is $100, which supports the Alumni Scholarship Fund and administrative costs. Some courses may also have additional fees.

Courses not available for Alumni Audit include independent study or reading, private music instruction, laboratory courses, and maintaining matriculation. The following schools and departments require faculty or departmental approval. If approval is required, the instructor or department must provide written approval before the student may register as an alumni auditor.

  • School of International Service (SIS): All courses that require a prerequisite need departmental approval. Please note that SIS-633 and SIS-033 are not available for alumni auditors.
  • School of Communication (SOC): All courses must be approved through Laura BonDurant at bonduran@american.edu.

-American University announces a new online graduate certificate in Digital Media Skills. For more information, contact Graduate Admissions at 202-885-2040. These classes needed for this graduate certificate are not available for Alumni Audit.

  • School of Public Affairs (SPA): All courses must be approved through the respective department.
  • College of Arts and Sciences (CAS):

-Anthropology (courses at the 500 level and above)

-Art (all courses)

-Audio Technology (all courses)

-Health and Fitness (all courses) *Please note that there is a $150 course fee for all Health and Fitness classes.

-History (courses at the 500 level and above)

-Language and Foreign Studies (all courses)

-Literature (courses at the 400 level and above)

-Psychology (all courses)

  • Kogod School of Business (KOGOD): All courses that require a prerequisite need departmental approval.
