Introduction to Western art and architecture from ancient times to the twentieth century, with some discussion of non-Western cultures. Case studies of major works and artists such as the Great Pyramids, the Parthenon, Chartres Cathedral, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, and Picasso provide a foundation for understanding art in its aesthetic, historical, social, and political contexts. Also covers materials, techniques, and practices of art-making, and introduces key stylistic innovations. Usually offered every term.
