Section Title: Gender in East Asian Visual Culture
This course explores men's construction of modern masculinity and women's contestation against Confucian patriarchy in the visual fields in East Asia, with an emphasis on China, in the first half of the twentieth century. Painting, photography, film and illustrations in magazines are the main media examined. The course focuses on the representation and visual consumption of the male and female body to decode how gender acquired its modern definitions in East Asian societies through artistic creations.
