A survey of European art from 1900 to 1945, focusing on stylistic and conceptual innovations within their social and political contexts, including changing definitions of modernity and modernism; primitivism and colonialism; the rise abstraction; and "high" art's relation to mass culture. Artists include Wassily Kandinsky, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Hannah Hoch, and Marcel Duchamp. Meets with ARTH-411. Usually offered alternate years.
