Cultural Foundations of Italian Politics

This first-year seminar for entering freshmen on the cultural foundations of Italian politics opens with an intensive 3-week summer living and learning experience in Rome and continues with a fall term seminar on the AU campus. The course has an international and comparative perspective and includes the cultural, artistic, religious, and historical foundations of Rome and its many and evolving political systems and its continuing influence throughout history, as well as Italian political institutions and sites. In Rome, students are based at the American University of Rome. Open only to students in the Cultural Foundations of Italian Politics Program. Meets with GNED-110 N01S GNED-130 N01S GNED-140 N01S.

Do the Right Thing

This course makes the case for doing the right thing. It explores questions about conduct--what to do, how to act, and why--as understood by the most salient theories of ethics. Examining major works in Western philosophy, the class discusses issues including moral goodness and evil, the nature of justice and rights, the relationship between morality and self-interest, the justification of moral judgments, relativism versus objective truth, the role of pleasure in the good life, and the meaning of character and virtue. Another central concern is to examine the relationship between "doing the right thing" and living the good life. This is done by applying ethical theories to contemporary moral issues pertinent to both college life (online social relations, academic plagiarism, drug use) and public policy (prostitution, animal rights, responsibility in media coverage). Open only to students in the AU Scholars Program.

The Examined Life

Following the intensive 3-week summer living and learning experience in Thessaloniki, Greece, this first-year seminar for entering freshmen continues on-campus in the fall semester. The focus of the course is an examination of the roots of justice and daily life in the ancient Greek world by reading historical, literary, and philosophical texts. In addition, students spend time studying art history and complete a museum practicum. Meets with GNED-110 001.

This first-year seminar for entering freshmen begins with a three-week summer session in Thessaloniki, Greece and continues with a fall term seminar on the AU campus. The focus of the course is an examination of the roots of justice and daily life in the ancient Greek world by reading historical, literary, and philosophical texts. In addition students spend time studying art history and complete a museum practicum. In Greece, classes are based at the American College of Thessaloniki (ACT) and are supplemented and enhanced with walking tours and site visits throughout Thessaloniki and its environs.
