Power, Money and Ethics in the American Museum

American museums are at the crossroads of advocacy and diplomacy, reflective contemplation and community activation, fundraising and provision of common goods. This course explores the ethical, political, economic and social pressures at work in the 21st century American museum, with a particular focus on staff and audience engagement, donor relations, and the ethics of collections management and earned income. International Cultural Management

This course introduces students to how global trends affect local arts organizations. It is an applied policy course, where students are able to trace connections between the economic, political, and social issues affecting the world and day-to-day cultural management. This course investigates leadership practice of artists, those who work in a cultural institution and cultural rights advocates. Students explore central concepts of leadership; examine how leadership works in the arts domain that interests them; review modalities of leadership development; and produce professional-grade writing related to their leadership goals.
