Additional Class Fee: $475. Off-campus: Delta, Pennsylvania. Delta Hobo Jungle (3) This field methods course takes place in the town of Delta, Pennsylvania. Students learn the basic methods of archaeological excavation and analysis at the site, in project laboratories, and through occasional lectures. The work focuses on a known "hobo jungle" located near a railroad trestle at the edge of town as researchers try to explore the daily lives of transient laborers who lived at the site between about 1880 and 1940. Students are critically important participants in this research as they learn the craft of archaeology and about the social and economic worlds of transient workers in the greater Washington, DC/Baltimore region. Ethnography Field School: Tribes on the Hill (3) Through analysis of classic and contemporary writings on the praxis of ethnography, and fieldwork consisting of constituent visits, lobbying, deep hanging out at the Congressional cafeteria and more, students learn the ethnographic method and gain a familiarity with the taboos, rituals, and tribes of Capitol Hill.
