Environmental Toxicology This course combines elements of biology and chemistry with many other disciplines. It is the study of the effects of toxic substances on environmental systems and in living organisms including humans. In this course students gain an understanding of the sources of environmental contaminants; examine toxicological methods to assess the fate and effects of environmental chemicals on organisms and the environment; and explore substances and issues of current concern. The fundamental concepts are reinforced by discussions and projects that draw upon case studies and the peer-reviewed scientific literature. Meets with ENVS-696 001.

Exploring the Arctic: The World's Last Frontier The Arctic is emerging as one of the most important geopolitical areas in the world. This course contends with interdisciplinary Arctic issues involving the environment, law, science, politics, and economics. The class analyzes Arctic state policies and explores the changing north, involving understanding climate change impacts, natural resource extraction issues, renewable energy opportunities, indigenous rights, international negotiations, comparative law, and territorial claims. Students assess the potential of future regional cooperation, military rivalry and/or Arctic conflict. Guest speakers include senior U.S. and foreign governmental officials, business leaders, scientific/civil society experts and senior military officers. Students complete a major research paper and are expected to actively participate in class.
