At American University in Washington, D.C., high school students have rare opportunities to learn professional-level skills from seasoned faculty and take field trips to see first-hand how experts—we like to call them wonks—put those skills to work.
You’ll use the city as your powerful laboratory for learning through AU’s well-established connections. Even if you can’t make it to D.C. this summer, you can still take advantage of these opportunities through a new online option.
You can choose from engaging and interactive programs in communication, international studies, and politics. Get to know what AU has to offer, and discover your passion.
In addition to participating in the following programs, high school students with a B or better grade point average may enroll as nondegree students in summer session courses at the 100- or 200-level. For more information, call 202-885-2421, or e-mail summer@american.edu.
Community of Scholars Program
Designed for rising junior and senior high school students, the Community of Scholars Program at AU's School of International Service is an opportunity for academically-outstanding high school students to take a 3-credit course which enhances their preparation for college. This program introduces students to the advancing fields of international conflict resolution, U.S. foreign policy, and global health and environmental politics. Students learn from highly regarded AU faculty in small, interactive classes while obtaining college credit. Students will experience how national and international leaders put theory into practice through guest speakers, site visits, and an introduction to the institutions of Washington that turn ideas into action. Taking a college course helps prepare students for the expectations of higher education and will add value to their college application and resume. Community of Scholars is offered in several formats, including a 3-week non-residential program as well as a 4-week combination online/on-campus format. For more information email communityofscholars@american.edu, call 202-885-2442, or visit the Community of Scholars Program.
