Civil War Institute (HIST 082/382/682-N01)
This week-long summer program introduces participants to the key causes and consequences of the war by exploring its remnants and remembrances in the Washington, D.C. area. The intensive program combines morning presentations and discussions with afternoon field trips. Sites include Harper's Ferry, Antietam, Arlington National Cemetery, Sherman and Grant Memorials, Howard University, Fort Stevens, Frederick Douglass Home, Ford's Theater, and a full-day trip to Richmond. Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Beyond (HIST-084/384/684-N01)
Summer study trip to Japan in conjunction with the Nuclear Studies Institute. Focuses on Japanese wartime aggression, the human devastation wrought by the atomic bombings, current Japanese and international efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons, and the building of closer ties between the people of the United States and Japan. Participants hear first-hand accounts of atomic bomb survivors and Asian victims of Japanese atrocities, visit sites of historical and cultural significance, and attend commemorative events. Walking Dostoyevsky's Russia (HIST-396/696-N01)
Based on Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, this ten-day trip will revolve around walking the streets described in the novel and exploring the cultural and historical sites in St. Petersburg, Russia. Mornings and afternoons will be dedicated to touring the city, meeting with local scholars, and discussing Dostoyevsky's works. In the evenings, students will attend cultural events.
TESOL Institute
American University’s TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Institute offers two sessions of course work that enable students to complete AU’s TESOL certificate program in one summer. Topics include principles of linguistics, English-language teaching, the structure of English, and second-language acquisition. Students enrolled in TESOL Institute courses are invited to participate in additional activities including lectures, short courses, workshops, receptions, and other social events. SIS Summer Abroad Programs: Seminars and Internships
Each summer, the School of International Service (SIS) offers a number of short-term, experiential programs abroad for graduate and advanced undergraduate students from any university or college in the USA. The intensive schedule of these programs allows students with academic year commitments to complement their studies with an experience abroad. The programs are faculty-led and content-specific for students who wish to concentrate on a specific region or topic area. Each program offers ample opportunity to interact with local and regional leaders, conduct field research, and engage in challenging internship positions. Peacebuilding and Development Institute
The Summer Professional Training Program provides training to development workers, government officials, conflict resolution practitioners, graduate students, and others working in conflict zones to complement their daily field work. It is one of the first practical training programs specifically designed to bridge the fields of peacebuilding and development. Experienced trainers guide participants through hands-on sessions to explore the relationships between religion, culture, human rights, the media, gender, and applied theories in peacebuilding and development work. Participants explore innovative methods while expanding their knowledge and skills in a participatory and interactive learning environment. Campaign Management Institute (CMI)
This institute comprehensively covers campaign techniques, strategies, and tactics with emphasis on recent technological developments. Public Affairs and Advocacy Institute (PAAI)
Explore the lobbying profession through an intensive two-week program. The format allows participants to become immersed in the strategies and tactics of organized interests seeking to influence the federal policy-making process. In addition to the applied aspects of the public affairs field, the institute places lobbying in a more theoretical perspective by linking the practical components of political influence with broader issues of democratic political representation. European Public Affairs and Advocacy
This unique course will introduce students to the art and craft of lobbying in the European Union. During a week in Brussels, Belgium, students will be immersed in the strategies, tactics, methods, techniques, regulations and ethics of lobbying in Europe. Drawing on their rich body of experiences, prominent lobbyists involved in all aspects of their profession will offer lectures on such topics as EU legal systems, rulemaking, EU relations with national capitals, EU-US relations and comparisons between US and European policymaking. Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law
The Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law offers training and courses in human rights for scholars, practitioners and students interested in the international human rights system and laws. Choose from 18 courses, 10 in English and 8 in Spanish. Build relationships with peers from around the world, establish connections with faculty around the world, and attend special events in Washington, DC.
Environmental Law Summer Program
This Session provides law students, practitioners, and other environmental professionals and scholars with an opportunity for environmental law training over a three-week period. Courses are taught by leading practitioners from government, business, and non-governmental organizations.
International Arbitration Summer Program
Taught by leading practitioners and arbitrators from throughout the world, the Program focuses on theoretical and practical aspects of international arbitration, and provides insights on the practice of international arbitration and the handling of arbitration cases. Courses are designed to meet the complex needs and busy schedules of practicing attorneys.
Health Law and Policy Institute
The Health Law and Policy Institute provides students and practitioners a broad range of custom-developed courses for intensive training in various aspects of health law and policy. Courses are taught by leading practitioners from private practice businesses and government, non-governmental, and health care organizations.
Law and Government Institute
The Summer Institute on Law and Government is a new two-week program for both experienced practitioners and law students who are serious about law and public service. This program will focus on the unique nature of practicing law in Washington, D.C., and explore the way the financial crisis is reshaping the financial regulatory landscape.
Legal English (Register for 1, 2 or 3 weeks)
The Summer Legal English Institute introduces foreign practitioners and incoming LL.M. students to legal English concepts. Students practice a wide array of legal English skills ranging from legal reading and writing strategies to oral presentation of substantive legal issues in American contract law. The program includes daily lectures, written assignments, in-class exercises, contract negotiations, and a mock arbitration.
International Organization, Law and Diplomacy
Globalization and the changing architecture of global governance pose many challenges to governments and to other international actors. These challenges require scholars and practitioners to rethink the nature of global governance in contemporary international society and to find new ways of understanding multilateralism, international organizations, and rules and practices. The Program on International Organizations, Law and Diplomacy combines legal, diplomatic, and social scientific approaches to the study of multilateralism.
