Applied Computing: MS in Applied Science

Program & Courses - Admission Reqs - Graduation Reqs - Internships - Faculty

State of the Industry

The applied computing concentration needs students because industry needs employees. Two recent changes impact this situation: drastically tightened restrictions on foreign students and fewer students interested in studying computing. And yet, science and technology are constantly expanding and deepening their effects on society—thus does society need a shorter time period to educate its future scientists.

Once in the working world, employers want computing professionals with two closely related skills: interpersonal skills, such as negotiation, conflict management and team skills or the ability to work with others. Employers also look for people who have ability to see the big picture, to see how everything fits together. PSM students, in professional skills seminars, have the opportunity to develop some of these skills.

Program Description

Students pursuing the Professional Science Master’s Degree will gain core competencies in statistics and research methods, as well as applied computing topics such as simulation and modeling and geographic information systems. Students in the program will study algorithms and data structures, computer networks and database management systems, plus cutting-edge issues in computing, such as data visualization, artificial neural networks, and network security.

Students will also choose among electives depending on their interests and career goals. Electives should mostly be from the field of science, but with advice from an advisor, students may register for non-science courses.

Classes are delivered in the evenings to accommodate PSM students who work full time.
