Graduate Research Award: Huong Nguyen
SIS/MA '11, International Affairs, Comparative and Regional Studies (East Asia)
The China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement went into effect in its first phase on January 1, 2010, but the political as well as economic implications for participating countries necessitate careful examination along the way. Would ASEAN member countries benefit or be worse off from this free trade agreement? Would it complement or undermine multilateral efforts already in place in fostering trade liberalization by other regional economic institutions like APEC and AFTA?
After spending a summer conducting research in Singapore, Nguyen hoped to have substantial finding on how the shift in China's domestic economic policy has affected its regional trade policy and if the Agreement would advance regional economic integration.
