PhD Program -- Fellowships, Grants and External Funding

The following information was compiled at the suggestion of SIS doctoral students. Without duplicating other sources, listed are organizations, awards, fellowships and grants for which SIS PhD students are eligible. 

American University Resources

SIS provides support for PhD student research in the form of dissertation fellowships, prizes and travel grants. In addition, several offices of American University employ full-time staff to assist doctoral students in identifying outside financial awards.

A division of the University’s Career Center, OMA administers scholarships including Fulbright, Boren and NSEP fellowships, the U.S. State Department’s Crticial Language Scholarships as well as providing individual assistance to students seeking outside awards.

OSP provides grant writing and administration assistance to both faculty and staff. Services include subscription to several grant and fellowship search engines, listings of funding organizations relevant to the field, individual assistance to students with grant and proposal writing, and administration of outside awards.

Although mainly a faculty resource, CTRL services may also be used by AU PhD students.
