About the Chapter

Who are SIS alumni?

Spread throughout the world, SIS's nearly 20,000 alumni can be found virtually all careers and lifestyles. Many find their way to government agencies including the State Department, the Department of Defense, and even the EPA. Others decide to work internationally for relief agencies or organizations such as USAID and the World Bank, or start their own non-profit to put the skills learned at SIS to work. Still others have become artists, authors, photographers, playwrights, lawyers, economists, business owners, members of congress, scholars—and that's only a few professions our alumni have chosen! Though SIS alumni can be found in all corners of the earth, many have chosen to remain in Washington, DC, giving the SIS Alumni Chapter the opportunity to thrive.

How do I join the Chapter?

Simply click here and fill out the online form! Annual dues are $20, and can be paid via check or credit card. Chapter dues help defray some of the operating costs of the Chapter, and when you join you may indicate which activities you would be interested in being involved in (such as the Fall Dinner, mentoring activities, panel discussions, etc.).

How do I benefit from joining the Chapter?

  • You can easily give back to SIS through hosting interns, mentoring current students, recruiting new students, speaking at SIS events, or in many other ways.
  • You will receive reduced attendance fees to SIS events, such as the Fall Dinner and spring Embassy Reception.
  • You will meet old and new friends, have the opportunity to network, and interact with current SIS students through our many events held throughout the year.
  • You will be informed of SIS happenings through the Diplomatic Pouch newsletter, e-mail communications from the staff and the Dean, and through the soon-to-be-launched SIS alumni-published newsletter.
  • You will have the chance to reconnect with the SIS and AU community through school and campus-wide events, mentoring and guest lecturing opportunities, and possibly becoming a donor.
  • You will be associated with a top tier school of international relations and benefit from the life-long learning opportunities available to you as a graduate.
  • Other benefits available only to active AU alumni, detailed on the American University Alumni Benefits & Services site, include:
    • Bender Library card
    • Jacobs Fitness Center discount
    • Child care access
