Funds contributed for the establishment of a chair enable the creation of a new faculty position and support American's effort to attract and retain scholars of national and international acclaim. Endowed chairs may be created in any existing academic program. Candidates for endowed chairs are recommended by the Dean and the Provost and require the approval of the President. Income from $1,750,000 of the endowment is dedicated to support the salary of the incumbent, and the remaining $250,000 in endowment supports negotiated expenses for the chair holder's use, which may include a summer research stipend, equipment, travel expenses, research assistants or administrative support.
Funds contributed for the establishment of a distinguished professorship enable the University to support more fully the teaching and research of an outstanding faculty member. This type of endowment enables the University to retain highly productive faculty members by providing additional funding for an existing professorship.
Faculty fellow endowments are used to support the work of current faculty members. Earnings from the endowment may provide summer research stipends, equipment, research travel, other research or administrative assistance but cannot supplement academic year salaries.
Visiting professorships enable the University to bring distinguished scholars, journalists, writers, and diplomats to campus for temporary appointments, usually for a semester or less. Visiting faculty enrich and stimulate the academic environment. Endowment income is used to cover stipends, travel costs, and other expenses associated with the visit.
An endowed lectureship provides ongoing funding for the travel costs, living expenses and housing of guests invited to the School of International Service to lecture and conduct seminars. Important visitors provide variety and scope to the learning opportunities available at American University.
