Crafting a Comprehensive Partnership: A New Era of U.S.-Indonesian Relations

The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) visited American University to co-host with the ASEAN Studies Center an off-the-record discussion on the future of the U.S.-Indonesian relationship. Mr. Derek Chollet, Principal Deputy Director, Policy Planning Staff, U.S. Department of State; Mr. Abraham M. Denmark, Fellow and Director of the Asia-Pacific Security Program, Center for a New American Security; and Dr. Pek-Koon Heng, Assistant Professor at AU’s School of International Service and Director of the ASEAN Studies Center, spoke at the event. The discussion focused on the increasing importance of Indonesia on the global stage and the importance of closer economic and security cooperation between the U.S. and Indonesia as a way of helping Indonesia build capacity for contributing to regional and global challenges such as climate change, economic integration, and regional security.
