ASEAN Studies Center Launch Ceremony and Symposium, “ASEAN and Regionalism in East/Southeast Asia”
ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Surin Pitsuwan visited American University to participate in the official launch ceremony of AU’s new ASEAN Studies Center. The Center, which had been operating since its soft launch at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta seven months earlier, is the first of its kind in the United States. Its establishment reflects Southeast Asia’s growing importance and increasing U.S. interest in the region. Secretary-General Surin, who was present at the soft launch ceremony last July, gave the keynote address in AU’s Katzen Arts Center Auditorium. The symposium panelists were Dr. Alice Ba (University of Delaware), Dr. Hiro Katsumata (Waseda University, Japan), Dr. Paul Evans (University of British Columbia), and Dr. Mely Caballero-Anthony (RSIS Center for Non-Traditional Security Studies, Singapore). Discussants included Dr. Amitav Acharya (American University, ASC Chair) and Dr. Satu Limaye (East-West Center Washington).
